Legacy Lines

A location-based digital heritage format. Concept in development — seeking commissioning partners and R&D funding.

About the Project

Legacy Lines is a browser-based audio storytelling format that brings local heritage walks into the digital realm. Participants move through physical spaces and unlock narrated stories tied to specific GPS coordinates — accessible via smartphone, no app download required.

The format was originally developed for the University of York's EDI Exchange initiative. Current development focuses on preserving underrepresented regional histories through interactive digital experiences, with particular emphasis on Black British heritage narratives in Northern England. Legacy Lines is in active development.

This page documents the concept and our vision for scalable heritage preservation.

The Format

  • Participants follow a walking route through a location

  • Geolocation technology triggers audio stories at specific coordinates

  • Content co-created with community historians and cultural experts

  • Accessible by design — text transcripts, visual content, future BSL integration

  • Replicable across any location with heritage stories to preserve

Potential Applications

  • Black history walks in UK cities with under-documented diaspora heritage

  • Literary and industrial heritage routes (e.g. Brontë Country, mill town histories)

  • Accessible digital alternatives to seasonal or physically demanding heritage tours

  • Educational resources for schools and universities

What We're Looking For

Legacy Lines is actively seeking R&D funding and heritage commissioning partners — museums, cultural venues, local authorities and heritage organisations interested in co-developing the format as a licensable digital heritage product.
